CORRECT OPERATION

Fuel tank vapors are vented to the charcoal element of the vapor canister and stored there when the engine in not operating. This prevents hydrocarbon emissions (gasoline fumes) from being released into the atmosphere. When the engine is on, the vapors are pulled by engine vacuum into the intake manifold for burning along with filtered air that enters the bottom of the canister. It is this fresh air filter that may need to be changed periodically.
